Some days are just long, and the last thing you want is a complex recipe involving multiple pans or precise timing. This tuna salad melt is designed for those exact moments because it delivers maximum comfort with minimal effort. We use a simple base of creamy mayo and crisp celery to build a satisfying texture that feels like a homemade treat. The toasted bread provides a satisfying crunch against the melted cheese, making it feel substantial enough for a full dinner. It's ready in under 20 minutes, so you can get from 'exhausted' to 'eating' before your show even starts. The hint of lemon and cracked pepper brightens everything up without requiring any fancy techniques.

Ingredients

  • 2 unit canned tuna — drained, approx 5oz each
  • 0.25 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 unit stalk celery — finely diced
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 0.5 tsp dried dill
  • 1 pinch garlic powder
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 4 unit slices of bread — sourdough or whole grain work great
  • 4 unit slices of cheese — cheddar or swiss

Method

  1. 1 In a medium bowl, flake the drained tuna with a fork and mix in the mayonnaise, diced celery, lemon juice, dill, garlic powder, and salt.
  2. 2 Spread the tuna mixture evenly over two slices of bread for each sandwich.
  3. 3 Top each with a slice of cheese and close the sandwich.
  4. 4 Butter the outside of the bread (optional) and grill in a skillet over medium heat for 3-4 minutes per side until the cheese is melted and the bread is golden brown.

Variations

  • Vegetarian Swap — Replace the tuna with mashed chickpeas and a splash of extra lemon juice for a similar texture.
  • Extra Crunch — Add 1 tablespoon of chopped pickles or capers to the tuna mix for an extra pop of flavor.

Notes

If you're extra tired, skip the buttering step; the toasted bread will still be delicious with melted cheese.

Equipment that helps

  • Cast iron skillet — Provides even heat and a great crust on the bread.
  • Mixing bowl — Makes combining the tuna ingredients quick and mess-free.
