Craving something comforting and filling? This one-bowl wonder hits the spot every single time.
When you're too tired to navigate a complex recipe but still want a proper dinner, these salmon donburi bowls are your best friend. They offer that perfect balance of savory glaze and satisfying rice without requiring an hour in the kitchen. It’s a low-effort way to get a high-reward meal—think of it as a warm hug in bowl form. You can whip this up on a Tuesday night when your brain is fried, and it still feels like a special treat.
Ingredients
- 2 unit salmon fillets
- 1.5 cup cooked white rice
- 3 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp honey
- 1 tsp grated ginger
- 2 unit garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 1 pinch red pepper flakes
Method
- 1 In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, honey, grated ginger, minced garlic, sesame oil, and red pepper flakes to create the glaze.
- 2 Pat the salmon fillets dry with paper towels and season lightly with salt and pepper (optional).
- 3 Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the salmon and sear for 4-5 minutes on one side.
- 4 Flip the salmon and pour the sauce into the pan. Cook for another 3-4 minutes while spooning the bubbling sauce over the fish until it thickens slightly.
- 5 Divide the rice between two bowls, top with the salmon fillets, and drizzle with any remaining glaze from the pan.
Variations
- Quick Prep — Use pre-cooked microwave rice packets to cut prep time down to under 15 minutes.
- Vegetarian Swap — Swap the salmon for extra-firm tofu blocks, tossed in the same glaze until golden.
Notes
If you don't have fresh ginger, a pinch of ground ginger from your spice rack works just as well. For extra texture, garnish with sliced green onions or toasted sesame seeds.
Equipment that helps
- Large Skillet — Allows you to sear the fish and reduce the sauce simultaneously in one pan.
