When you're exhausted and just want a meal that feels like a warm hug, this Harira is your secret weapon. While traditional Harira can take hours of simmering to develop its deep flavors, we’ve streamlined it for the weary home cook by using hearty canned ingredients and quick-cooking shrimp. You get all those incredible notes of cumin, turmeric, and ginger without the marathon time in the kitchen. The tomatoes provide a rich base that coats the back of your spoon, while the lentils add heartiness. It smells like a Moroccan spice market the moment it hits the burner. Serve it with a piece of crusty bread to soak up every last drop of the golden-hued broth—it's pure comfort in a bowl.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb shrimp — peeled and deveined
  • 1.5 cup canned diced tomatoes
  • 0.5 cup red lentils — rinsed
  • 1 cup vegetable broth
  • 2 unit garlic — minced
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric
  • 0.5 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper — adjust for heat preference
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

Method

  1. 1 Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the garlic and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant but not browned.
  2. 2 Stir in the cumin, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper. Toast the spices with the garlic for about 30 seconds to release their oils.
  3. 3 Add the diced tomatoes, rinsed lentils, and vegetable broth. Stir well to combine all ingredients.
  4. 4 Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the lentils are tender.
  5. 5 Stir in the shrimp and cook for an additional 4-5 minutes until they turn pink and opaque.
  6. 6 Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve hot in deep bowls.

Variations

  • Vegetarian Swap — Replace the shrimp with a can of drained chickpeas for a hearty plant-based version.
  • Extra Hearty — Add a diced zucchini or a handful of chopped spinach during the final 5 minutes of simmering.

Notes

If you want a thicker consistency, mash some of the cooked lentils against the side of the pot before adding the shrimp.

Equipment that helps

  • Large Pot — Allows enough room for the lentils to expand and simmer comfortably.
