Quick Tuna Poke Bowls
When you want a fresh, high-protein dinner but have zero energy for actual cooking.
There is something deeply satisfying about a poke bowl when you've had a long day; it feels like a sophisticated reward that requires almost no effort to assemble. This version of the classic Hawaiian-inspired dish is designed specifically for those nights when your brain is fried and you just need something nourishing, chilled, and flavorful. By using sushi-grade tuna and a simple soy-sesame dressing, you get that authentic umami punch without spending an hour in the kitchen. The secret is in the prep: once the fish is tossed in the sauce, it's ready to go. You can serve this over pre-cooked rice or even some crunchy greens if you want extra volume. It’s essentially a hug in a bowl for your hungry, tired self.
Ingredients
- 0.5 lb sushi-grade tuna
- 1 cup cooked jasmine rice
- 1 unit avocado
- 3 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 1 tsp fresh ginger — grated
- 1 tsp garlic — minced
- 1 tsp honey
- 1 pinch red pepper flakes
- 2 unit green onions — thinly sliced
Method
- 1 In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, sesame oil, grated ginger, minced garlic, honey, and red pepper flakes.
- 2 Dice the tuna into small 1/2-inch cubes and place in a medium mixing bowl.
- 3 Pour the dressing over the tuna and toss gently to coat evenly. Let sit for 5 minutes while you prep the rest.
- 4 Slice the avocado into thin wedges or chunks and slice the green onions.
- 5 Divide the cooked rice into two bowls as your base.
- 6 Top each bowl with half of the marinated tuna, avocado slices, and a sprinkle of green onions.
- 7 Garnish with an extra drizzle of sesame oil if you're feeling fancy.
Variations
- Vegetarian Tofu Poke — Swap the tuna for firm tofu. Press the tofu for 15 minutes, cube it, and marinate in the same sauce.
- Speedy Shortcut — Use a pre-made sushi rice mix from the grocery store to skip the rice prep entirely.
Notes
For the best texture, keep the fish chilled until the moment you are ready to serve. If you can't find sushi-grade tuna, use a high-quality canned tuna (drained) for a different but still delicious take.
Equipment that helps
- Mixing bowl — Allows you to toss the tuna in the marinade thoroughly before assembly.
