Craving something fancy but too tired to cook? This elegant sear takes less than 15 minutes.
When you want a high-end dinner experience without the gourmet effort, this tuna tataki is your best friend. It feels like a special occasion meal because of the beautiful sear and bold ginger notes, but it actually comes together in a fraction of the time. We're keeping it low-friction by using simple aromatics to build a massive flavor profile. You get that satisfying 'restaurant quality' feel while staying in your pajamas—perfect for those nights when you want something sophisticated yet incredibly easy to execute.
Ingredients
- 8 oz Sashimi-grade tuna steak
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp fresh ginger, grated
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 1 tbsp honey
- 2 tsp garlic, minced
- 1 tsp red pepper flakes
- 2 tbsp sesame seeds — toasted
Method
- 1 Pat the tuna dry with paper towels. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, ginger, sesame oil, honey, garlic, and red pepper flakes.
- 2 Marinate the tuna in the sauce for 5 minutes. If you're extra hungry, you can skip this step and go straight to searing.
- 3 Heat a heavy skillet or cast iron pan over medium-high heat. Add a tiny splash of oil if needed.
- 4 Sear the tuna for about 60-90 seconds on each side until just browned on the outside but still rare in the middle.
- 5 Remove from heat and let rest for 2 minutes. Slice into thin strips, sprinkle with sesame seeds, and serve immediately.
Variations
- No-Honey Version — Swap the honey for 1 tablespoon of maple syrup or extra ginger for a more earthy, less sweet profile.
- Add Crunch — Serve alongside sliced cucumbers and radishes to add a refreshing crunch to each bite.
Notes
Make sure your tuna is labeled 'sashimi-grade' or 'sushi-grade' to ensure it's safe to eat rare.
Equipment that helps
- Cast Iron Skillet — Provides an even sear on the fish for that authentic tataki crust.
- Small Mixing Bowl — Easily combines your marinade ingredients before coating the tuna.
